Hiroshima, the atom bonb, nuclear testing in the desert, the launch of Sputnik in 1957 all played on the hopes and fears of the American public and captured jewelry designers imaginations as well. So-called "atomic" motifs in jewelry exploded into retail venues after VJ (Victory over Japan) Day and continued to sell in the 1950s as the Cold War warmed up and the military began testing bombs at home.
