More about Daniel Swarovski

Born in 1862 in Bohemia, Daniel Swarovski became a gem cutter in his father's business. After experimenting with cutting glass stones, he managed to produce small, very high-quality, brilliant cut crystal rhinestones. These were soon in such demand with jewelry manufacturers that Swarovski invented a mechanical stone-cutter that could shape and faceting large quantities of equally perfect stones. Swarovski maintains its reputation for producing crystal rhinestones of unrivaled quality to this day.

The Swarovski name continued to improve the versatility of the stones by developing a polychrome metal surface coating for the stones in 1956 called "Aurora Borealis". This technique was named after the color-shifting phenomenon Northern Lights often seen in high altitude regions in the northern hemisphere.
